SPN Finale Final Thoughts S5

My rant about Season 5's finale.

I love this show. Now, I know some fans may disagree, but the season five finale really disappointed me.

The majority of it was DENSE dialogue that could have been spread out over a few episodes, but instead, it was crammed into an hour-long single episode. So much action happened in the last twenty minutes! I kept checking the clock during commercials and asking how they could tie everything up in the time remaining. Everything felt rushed like it hasn't since season three's writer's strike. And what was with Chuck poofing? Is he God? Was he called up to Heaven like Elijah, only without the Chariot of Fire? And he apologized for the ending!!! Like Kripke was writing the episode and thought, "Screw it. I hate endings anyway." Seriously, he had FIVE YEARS to polish this ending! Why apologize for it? And the fact that Sam came back totally unexplained seemed forced. Yeah, God can do whatever He wants, but it felt like if the show hadn't been renewed for a sixth season, Sam would have stayed dead. At least both guys are back for one last season. Maybe Sam will have a personality reboot back to the Sammy I loved from seasons one and two. And what about Bobby? Oh holes that are holey. Does Crowley still have it? I want the answer!

K, better now.

Originally Castiel was supposed to be God in disguise, but as it became more and more apparent - towards the end of season 4 and the beginning of 5 - that the series might be renewed for a 6th season, beyond the story as Kripke envisioned it, they decided to have Chuck be God instead, and leave an ambiguous ending so if the show was continued they could easily pick up where it left off. If it wasn't renewed, they supposedly had an alternate version of the final with Sam not appearing in the last scene that would give some "closure" and not leave very many loose ends. As it was Kripke was "finished" with the story he wanted to tell and was intent on leaving the show, whether it continued or not. As I heard it, his original ending was similar but with Dean mortally wounded before Sam tossed himself into the abyss. As he died, he prayed to God to at least save his brother, Castiel suddenly reappears, revealing himself as God, and in recognition of Dean's humility and Sam's sacrifice, heals Dean and saves Sam, and then goes back to Heaven, while the brothers ride off into the sunset. Or something like that. I've heard many subtly different versions and they all have to be taken with salt. Not sure about Bobby and Crowley, but those holes might have been added after they learned that there was for sure going to be a 6th season. I have no idea.
